The Vision I was Given

Now the vision must be shared

1. Return to the Old Ways

Everywhere I turn these days, I hear our Native people saying, “Return to the Old Ways!” But what are the “Old Ways” they speak of? “Old Ways” are the spiritual and cultural ways of our Ancestors. Language is central to this concept. Each of us is encouraged to learn as much of our Indigenous language as possible. Are you having trouble connecting to your Native language? That's one of the things we are here to do: help you find connections.

We also need cultural programs for learning our culture. Not all of us grew up in homes where we learned our Native culture. There are already many of these programs available that teach everything from basic culture–dress, food, housing and so on–to larger initiatives that are actually involved in bee keeping, rice production, bison-raising for food, all of which lead to sovereignty.

We need Elders who are willing to teach the ceremonies and community structure of pre-contact times, or at least as far back as they can remember. We need to practice the old ceremonies and go back to our community structure of pre-contact–a structure based on the circle, where everyone who sits in it is equal. We have been brainwashed into believing we must adopt and follow the colonists’ ways of doing things and, in the process, have become broken and splintered. This must stopNOW. Our continued existence as a people depends on us making these changes and taking back our sovereignty.

2. Healing

We must heal our DNA. We have suffered under the colonizers for over 528 years. The colonizers not only brought knives, swords, and guns to massacre us, they also brought disease and spread it everywhere they went–sometimes on purpose, as part of their intended and ongoing genocide. The scourge was rampant and still is. Since that time, they have introduced their ways of living and made us follow them or be killed. They introduced “fire water” or alcohol, which has been a plague upon our lands and peoples; they brought drugs and gangs; they took gold, oil, water, and minerals, the very blood and flesh of our Iná Makȟá (earth mother) with them. They not only still wish to eradicate us, they are also busy raping and killing our Uŋcí (grandmother) in the name of profit.

The road to healing, found in many native cultures, is found by returning to the Old Ways. Another means to healing is to follow the 12 Virtues, which are really basic ways to live by, found in many tribes. I learned them this way as a Lakota, but those from your specific tribe (or nation) may be slightly different.

A detailed list of the 12 Virtues (Lakota) may be found on a separate page by clicking on the link here.

We all must HEAL from this devastation; we must heal ourselves and each other by relearning our culture, language, and ceremonies. Treatment centers, ceremonies, restructuring, and tribal sovereignty are badly needed, in order to bring this about.

Imagine what we would be like as tribes if we were healed from all the devastation. Imagine how strong we would be–especially if we all came together in Unification. I shall speak of that in a bit.

3. Strength

If each of us were healed individually, our thiwáhe (family), our thiyóšpaye (extended family/tribe), our oyáte (people/nation) would be healthy, strong, and unstoppable! Our warriors–those who protect the people and the land–would be back. Our Grandmothers and Aunties, Sisters and Mothers would be safe and able to advise us, and our Elders would be able to teach us and share visions for the future of our nations. Our tribes would be productive by providing food, shelter, and necessary items to families and all those who need it, not just a chosen few, i.e., tribal council members. We would not need the colonists’ government, their ways, or their so-called “help”. Then and only then, will we be truly Sovereign.

Are we afraid of being healthy, being whole, taking care of ourselves? Are we afraid of what could happen if we were whole and healthy? Look what we are now. Some of us are caught up in the current society’s ways, many of which are steeped in negativity or what I call the “12 anti-virtues,” the polar opposite of our 12 virtues, which seem to dominate the colonizers’ lives. We want the big truck, the nice house, the huge acreage ranch. Maybe you have that. Meanwhile, some of us are suffering because we have too little food, inadequate shelter, and no real means of making a living. There is great disparity. Is this what our Ancestors died for, wanted for us, or saw in visions? I think not!

We need to wake up from our sleep, let go of our greed, and step completely away from the ways of the colonizers, which includes the church. Yes, the Christian church. Think about it. The blackrobes may have pretended to talk nice, yet they still killed us, stole our children, abused, raped, and killed many of them, while using their religion as a means of “crowd control.” They did all those things–or so they told us, so we could be “saved” (whatever that means) and not go to “hell” (wherever that is supposed to be). It is all a lie that was imposed on their own ancestors over 1,500 years ago by the Roman church, as a means of crowd control and has been ever since. There is no hell, no heaven. There is only creation/creator/spirit. Their religion cannot keep your spirit from going anywhere. Wake up, please. We need you. We need you healed and wholly back to your real native self! Be proud to be Native. Be Strong!

4. Unification

We need to become unified, as one giant “Ultra Confederacy,” meaning one people made up of many nations. However, Unification will never work unless each Tribe honors not only its own ways (culture, traditions, language, and spirituality), but the ways (culture, traditions, language, and spirituality) of all other nations. In this spirit of respectful, loving, accepting solidarity, Unification will allow all of us to finally stand as One People in harmony with all the other Tribes of Turtle and Heart Islands (what the colonizers call North and South America) and, eventually, with all indigenous of the world. When we become unified as healed and strong nations, imagine what we can do!

We need to start by being unified within our own tribes, maybe even our own families. Much healing needs to happen. We will be here for each other, which makes us all even stronger. It makes us a viable, visible, huge entity to be reckoned with and recognized by the world as strong, healthy and spiritually-grounded peoples. One arrow can be broken easily, but a whole bundle of arrows is almost impossible to break. Through Unification, we are indomitable, i.e., unable to be broken.

5. The Result

As the world becomes sicker and sicker with new viruses emerging, the destruction of our climates, the destruction of our ecosystems, she will become even sicker. She is out of balance. The people of the world are likewise off-balance. Many live their self-centered lives with eyes and hearts of greed and malice, while others are filled with despair and defeat. Some are trying to kill anyone who is not like them. We are on the verge of utter destruction.

Yet, according to the vision the Oglála Lakota holy man and warrior, Tȟašúŋka Witkó (Crazy Horse), we are to be Medicine for a sick world. For as long as we have been here, we have known how to live on and in harmony with Uŋčí Makȟá. We will be this medicine for a sick world but only if we return to the Old Ways.

I have seen a time in the not so distant future when many non-natives will realize the extent of their actions. They will then come to us for knowledge, understanding, and the most basic “how to's” of living in harmony with our Earth Mother. When this happens, we must be ready. This is our calling now and we must act on it.

Every Indigenous Nation of Turtle and Heart Island must rise up in Unification and be healed–in order to heal; be strong–in order to strengthen; be unified–in order to unify; and be willing to share our Sacred Medicines.

This is Returning to the Old Ways. Seven generations back and 7 generations forward. The beginning of these new 7 generations, as seen by Crazy Horse in his vision, is now.

TOGETHER WE RISE!!!!
